So, I just finished Xoc: The Journey of a Great White, a graphic novel put out by Oni Press, and I gotta say, I was pretty impressed. It won’t win any Eisner’s, but the message is strong. Matt Dembiki tells the tale mostly from a Great White Shark’s perspective, and gives a very needed heavy-handed and shocking narrative of how humans violate the ocean, and what happens to the creatures that we make movies of, get tattoos of, and overall capture our imaginations.

We don’t do many reviews here at We Doomed, but this particular book lines up with our mission to help out the sharks, especially with the notes at the end of the book where the author details ways the reader can help the ocean’s plight- stopping shark finning, aiding against pollution and other helpful things.

Follow Matt Dembiki’s blog here!

Interesting fact: “Xoc” is the Mayan word for “Devil Fish”. White folks heard it and turned it into “Shark”. Take that one with you to your next pub trivia night!

Furthermore, reading this has lit the flames of inspiration. Here is what sprang forth from my digital pen:

We’ll probably be making some stickers of this. If they sell well enough, who knows? Maybe a shirt will be made!

Thanks for reading folks! Remember, cut those soda can ring-holder-things! Use a battle-ax if you have to…or want to…I don’t really care, just make saving the environment Fucking METAL!

Every Girl’s Crazy ‘Bout a Sharp-Dressed Man

I think I stated before that I am bad about updating blogs. Well, dont say I didnt tell you so.

Anyhow. I’ve been stupid busy with my internship at Femina Potens, an LGBT art gallery in the Castro. I’ve been getting lots of hands-on experience installing quite a few art shows and pieces and meeting a ton of interesting people….and pestering them until they take my card.

Take this moment, for instance. I am currently at the gallery’s front desk, sipping crappy wine whilst chatting up people from Image Comics. Im trying very hard not to make a total ass of myself while subtly inching around the subject that I draw a webcomic….
(on that note, if any of you aren’t reading that yet READ IT OR STEAM REX WILL CONSUME YOUR FACE!!!
Its good times. Yeah, I dont get paid or anything, but I get free booze, exposure to interesting art, VIP pass to unique events, and (best of all) networking!! Plus this looks good on my resume. I guess it all pays for itself!

UNnortunately, I didnt get into “Black Lab”, an exhibit at another gallery I intern at “The Lab” is hosting in August. It centered around dark/evil/esoteric/ satiric themes, and I thought I was perfect for it. I did a piece with black cloth, a black light & optic-brightener laundry detergent:

Black Rorschach 01

Inspired by Rorscach Ink Blot tests, I’d hoped The Lab would’ve been attracted to my work. Oh well.

I also submitted photos to a book publishers looking for Steampunk-inspired art.

I bought a raccoon skull at Paxton Gate on Valencia for $10, and some watch bits I got on and BOOM! Behold! SteamRaccoon! I’ve yet to hear back from them too, but I’m still hoping they’ll like my work. The book is slated to come out mid 2011

Jackson and I are also still waiting on the Alternative Press Expo (APE) to respond to our application for a table. We are still going to make merch this summer, so look for a “store” link on the comic’s site!

That’s all for now. Cheers!

Hey Arizona, Don’t Fuck With This Mexican… MACHETE has some Cinco De Mayo words for you!!!

Hey folks, Harry here and earlier today Robert Rodriguez and Danny Trejo dropped by my house with a package. Rodriguez is calling this his “Illegal” trailer. You see, Robert talked Fox into letting him put together a Cinco De Mayo message for ARIZONA – given. Well, the way things are in Arizona at this moment – it is kinda insane that there is a movie that was shot over a year ago waiting to be released that is about – THIS EXACT ISSUE… but if, Danny Trejo and buddies went Revolution Wacko as a result.

Make no bones about it, this is a pure Mexploitation film, but like real exploitation at its height, that shit was pulled straight out of the headlines, even sometimes slightly before the headlines were the headlines. Frankly – that’s just kinda cool. We’ve all known about this silly fun project of Robert’s for a while, but then… an entire fucking state just goes fucking nuts… And us being Texans – we’re usually quite aware of the lunacy of our surroundings here. But really, ARIZONA… what the hell?

For your pure enjoyment here you go my friends, Happy CINCO DE MAYO! Spread this Everywhere!!!

Corpses and Cogs

My life is recently awash with new and exciting media!

1) Watchmen:

Finally getting around to reading it, and I gotta say, I am loving every minute of reading it. I really am disappointed in myself that I watched the movie first. I think Moore’s work is just as relevant now as it was when he wrote it; troubled social and economic times, uncertainty in the government’s military intentions, people going crazy, etc. I’m looking forward to watching the movie again and nit-picking at it once I’m done.Very good read! It really is a novel for comics. Hell, its a straight-up novel.

2) “The Black Parade” – My Chemical Romance

Ok, I admit that I had a couple of MCR’s songs in my iTunes for the longest time solely as a guilty pleasure, but after I popped “The Black Parade” into the car’s CD player during a roadtrip, I was hooked on it! I know MCR has a huge stigma for being an emo band, and while their aesthetic doesn’t do much to dissuade this idea, their sound is pure Rock. Their instrumentals are complex and haunting while Gerard Way’s voice soars above and over the melodious cacophony with intriguing and imagery-evoking lyrics. As surprised as I am to write this, this album is very reminiscent of Queen, David Bowie and Guns N’ Roses.

3) Wormwood Gentleman Corpse

Beautifully rendered and masterfully written, Ben Templesmith’s work is a true joy to read. Zany and rich characters matched with like art styles has made for yet another comic series to add to my growing collection. Supernatural comedies hold a special place in my brain, and a story about a worm which has possessed a rather well-dressed corpse accompanied by a clockwork companion that resembles a member of ZZ Top is no exception. I haven’t been this influenced by an artist’s style since I discovered Mike Mignola. To quote the forward by David Slade, “…tentacles-a-plenty, sex, guns, demons, and beer. What more does one want from a 21st century graphic novel?” This will be going right next to my Hellboy library!

4)Bioshock 2 (Multiplayer)

While the story mode is amazing, the multiplayer is where this game really shines. Once you level out of chump-land and get some decent gear, the game really gets fun. While the classic 1-2 Punch of ElectroBolt and Shotgun never goes out of style, being able to teleport, nail someone with a crossbow and (my personal favorite) cover someone IN FREAKIN’ BEES is just too much fun.

I’m off to get some prints done. Cheers!

Happy Guinness Day! Watching Sin City, Star Trek, an od course both Boondock Saints flicks and drinking an obscene amount of booze with friends, and a couple of special guests from SoCal. Life is good.

An oldie but a goodie in the spirit of the holiday:

Pure Fucking Metal

Just got back from the seriously brutal Arch Enemy/ Exodous concert @ The Regency Ballroom here in SF, and I return bruised, battered, tenderized even, but still extremly happy with the show! Went with my comedian friend and my musician friend. Exodous was savage as ever (thanks guys for introducing me to my first “Wall of Death [look it up]), but Arch Enemy was pure brutality and beauty wrapped into one tastey metal burrito!

… ok maybe “burrito” is the wrong metaphor here, but they were awesome nonetheless!!

I actually got to meet the Arch Enemy’s drummer and bassist before the show. My friends and I got off the bus a few stops early on accident and decided to just trek the last few blocks. I then saw a couple of black-clad, long-haired tall dudes step out of a doughnut shop on Geary, and I thought they looked a little bit familiar. I then spotted the Arch Enemy symbol on on of their sleeves. I whispered, in total fan-dom, to my friend “dude! that’s the bassist”!! So, I tapped him on the shoulder and asked “You guys playin tonight?, “Yeah” the drummer responds quietly, “I’ll be in the pit” I say with a thumb’s up, and we go on our merry way. Honestly, I wanted nothing more than to get his John Hankock and snap a picture with him, but they were spending time with some ladies, and I would rather not be that cockblocking fan. I was just happy to have personally met them.

I go put a cold beer to head now. My brain meats feel funny. Maybe getting kicked in the head in the pit has something to do with that…

Here be some pics of the show:
