Cap’n America! YAAR!!

Posted in Art, Gaming, Nerdery, Photoshop Fun, RedGrimRune, Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 2, 2013 by RedGrimRune

So, my roommates & I watched the first 3 “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies recently, and the awesomeness of pirates is truly never far from my thoughts (especially since, according to family legend, there is a Pirate waaay back in the Kent bloodline). Add to that sleep deprivation, caffeine & a mind-numbing early shift at my job, and BOOM!! – Cap’n America is born! Behold!

Yarr!!

Yarr!!

Furthermore, my girl & I spent 4 days at Comic Con International, and got to board the Jackdaw, the Pirate ship from the upcoming Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, so needless to say, the imagination hasn’t so much sparked, as it has been a raging inferno. I just needed some time to focus it, and forge something awesome out of it.

The Jackdaw! (actually the Star of India, but Ubisoft payed for the sail & paintjob…OMG ship in CosPlay!!)

Me & BlackBeard be maties!

Arr!

She be a beauty!

There will be prints of Cap’n America. Lemme know if you want one! Cheers, Maties!

Entry to Abe Sapien Art Contest – Process

Posted in Art, Nerdery, Photoshop Fun with tags , , , , , , , , on March 22, 2013 by RedGrimRune

Right now, Multiversity.com is gearing up for the new Abe Sapien series from Dark Horse Comics with an art contest. Everyday they have been posting Abe fanart from some of the great current comic book artists, and the turnout has been awesome! It has inspired me to join in and create something that I feel truly fits with the character. I’m going back to the very beginning of the Hellboy franchise where Abe saves the day by putting a harpoon through Rasputin’s torso, and sets in motion lots of events that permeate throughout the rest of the series for him, big red & lots of others.

Beginning sketches in blue graphite.

Refined sketch, again in blue.

Preliminary inks. Outlines mostly.

Behold! Color! The finished product, color scheme ripped shamelessly from Mignola himself.

Overall, I am pretty proud of the turnout. There still feels like something is missing in the final product, but I guess that’s a feeling every artist gets. I tried some new things, challenged myself and finished this within 12 hours. I did some hardcore anatomy studies for ¬†Abe’s pose from Olympic javelin throwers. I guess I didn’t get the right kind of motion or tense energy in Abe’s physicality that I was hoping for. Ah well, I learned a lot making this piece, and I hope that it catches someone’s eye at Multiversity.com. Also, tentacles are cool!

Cheers!

PS: The DoomCrew & I should be at BigWow ComicFest in San Jose. More details to come, but we may have some big stuff coming to the show, so keep May 18 & 19 open.

Foot in Door?

Lots going on! My webcomic is really taking off. If you’re not reading it yet, read it now or STEAMREX WILL DEVOUR YOUR FACE!!

www.6thcirclecomic.com

Also, I won a contest! My work is going to be featured in a coming printing of the Halo Evolutions Anthology. Tor Books and 343 Industries put out a message “Are you a Halo fan? Fancy yourself an Artist…” (check and check) “Then enter!!” (Check!!) I based my piece “Stomping on the Heels of a Fuss” on the story of the same name and it was chosen to preface the story in the next printing of Halo Evolutions!!

The cherry on top of all this is that I got to meet most of the authors of this book at San Diego Comic Con last month. I got to show the original sketch of said piece to the author and asked him to sign it. He then said he wants a print when its done and that he’ll keep an eye open for projects I could work on with him! *manly happy dance*

Much more is going on, but this has been the biggest news. I finally get the chance to make my impression on the Halo-verse! (checks off from “life goals list”)

Here’s Halo Waypoint’s official article: [link]

Cheers!

Every Girl’s Crazy ‘Bout a Sharp-Dressed Man

I think I stated before that I am bad about updating blogs. Well, dont say I didnt tell you so.

Anyhow. I’ve been stupid busy with my internship at Femina Potens, an LGBT art gallery in the Castro. I’ve been getting lots of hands-on experience installing quite a few art shows and pieces and meeting a ton of interesting people….and pestering them until they take my card.

Take this moment, for instance. I am currently at the gallery’s front desk, sipping crappy wine whilst chatting up people from Image Comics. Im trying very hard not to make a total ass of myself while subtly inching around the subject that I draw a webcomic….
(on that note, if any of you aren’t reading that yet READ IT OR STEAM REX WILL CONSUME YOUR FACE!!! 6thCircleComic.com)
Its good times. Yeah, I dont get paid or anything, but I get free booze, exposure to interesting art, VIP pass to unique events, and (best of all) networking!! Plus this looks good on my resume. I guess it all pays for itself!

UNnortunately, I didnt get into “Black Lab”, an exhibit at another gallery I intern at “The Lab” is hosting in August. It centered around dark/evil/esoteric/ satiric themes, and I thought I was perfect for it. I did a piece with black cloth, a black light & optic-brightener laundry detergent:

Black Rorschach 01

Inspired by Rorscach Ink Blot tests, I’d hoped The Lab would’ve been attracted to my work. Oh well.

I also submitted photos to a book publishers looking for Steampunk-inspired art.

SteamRaccoon!

I bought a raccoon skull at Paxton Gate on Valencia for $10, and some watch bits I got on Etsy.com and BOOM! Behold! SteamRaccoon! I’ve yet to hear back from them too, but I’m still hoping they’ll like my work. The book is slated to come out mid 2011

Jackson and I are also still waiting on the Alternative Press Expo (APE) to respond to our application for a table. We are still going to make merch this summer, so look for a “store” link on the comic’s site!

That’s all for now. Cheers!

Finally got cards made for the comic!

Designed the graphics myself. Jackson and I went to a local printing shop, Club Card Printing and got a bunch made for a resonable price. The we went around the Castro and handed out a few to Whatever Comics and Cicatrix Tattoo. Huzzah for marketing!!

Today was also an update day, our first “Sunday strip” style comic. Check it out!

6th Circle

I know it’s not the best pic ever, but here’s the card and me (minus most of my beard)

6th Circle DIY Stickers

Posted in 6th Circle, Art, Nerdery, Photoshop Fun with tags , , , , , , , on April 15, 2010 by RedGrimRune

Who needs a ‘professional’ printer when you can totally create your own stickers using linoleum, wood cutting tools, a roller, red ink and a ton of stickie name badges!

Behold! First batch of 6th Circle stickers.

Its good to put those 2 semesters of printmaking to use. I consider myself lucky that there was a tube of red printing ink in the box with the roller (India Ink just wasn’t cutting it). Regardless that the tools I used look like they’re from the 60’s or 70’s, they work really well. w00T for hand-me-downs!

These betties will be posted around the city (San Francisco), so if you’re a local, keep an eye out for them in tattoo shops, store windows, coffee houses, sides of buses, guitar cases, cop cars, and on your mama’s luggage.

Check out the comic! Its awe-sum! [updated Wednesdays]

Finally launched my webcomic! Check out:

6th Circle Comic

It’s a comic about a tattoo shop in San Francisco and it’s employees dealing with slow business, a demon in their closet and their newly bought gorrilla. Updated Wednesdays.

Updates on my art site. New Bioshock-themed pic. I had a total brain storm and hammered out the penned outlines in one day. I love my new black prismacolor pens! Go to:

RedGrimRune

I also just went to Wondercon with my girlfriend and her lil bro. It was awesome!! Met Adam Baldwin, made some contacts with other webcomic artists, and got half off on comics. I worked for a while on my duster for my costume, and it turned out great.

Yay for steampunk!!
